[...] UMA vs SIP - does UMA have a future ? - Is UMA a short-term hack, will it co-exist with end-end SIP IMS solutions ? [...]

Things to think about:

1. Carriers will be "open" to deploying POTS services built with mordern application development frameworks. They will save paying $$$$$ for silly upgrades. If this is IMS, then, it's been tried before with SS7/IP. SIP is interesting but irrelevant.

2. If the success of IMS depends on 4G handsets, we need to start discussing the applications that make up 4G. SIP is uninteresting by itself.

3. Most IMS gear is coming from the "traditional" vendors. These guys are famous for NIH. So, I don't hold hope for ISVs to deliver anything on this new network. Doesn't happen now, won't happen with IMS.

4. I will start beleiving when IBM or Microsoft announce a IMS compliant development environment, either on the handset side or the network side...

Right now, it is in our heads, or maybe a PhD. or two. Trials IMHO are happening with (1)... SOAP enabled POTS baby!
